Scottish Gin Distillery of the Year 2018

With Storm Ali sweeping its wet and windy way across the country, a small group of our staff left the Isle of Harris, headed for the city of Glasgow to attend the annual Scottish Gin Awards.

They were there to represent us at this esteemed industry event, where our young island endeavour had been nominated as finalists in three categories, including the prestigious Scottish Gin Distillery of the Year award.

Alex, Billy, Sandra, Ruth, Shona and John each play very different roles here in Tarbert. Individually, they’re a distiller, a tour guide, a storyteller, an office administrator, a warehouse supervisor and a retail manager, but together they embody the collective ‘croft’ spirit of our distillery family.

Smart kilts and glamorous dresses were donned and, fortified by a glass or two of Isle of Harris Gin, we joined the best of the Scottish gin industry at the sparkling ceremony. Surrounded by hundreds of our peers, we waited patiently for the results to be announced.

Meanwhile, back home in Harris, a number of other Hearach staff had gathered with our chairman and directors in the cosy confines of the North Harbour Bistro in Scalpay for some fine food and first word of any good news from our distant delegation.

As award after award was announced, it was to be a case of saving the best until last as all attention finally turned to the biggest award of the night, the Scottish Gin Distillery Of The Year 2018.

Alongside us, with equally bated breath, were the respected businesses of Eden Mill, Edinburgh Distillery, Glasgow Distillery Co. and MacQueen Gin, a strong indication of the standard set for this final award of the night.

And the winner was…the Isle of Harris Distillery.

We’re incredibly happy to receive this recognition of the hard work and achievements made so far. There have been many highlights and milestones along they way but we’re perhaps most proud of the secure local employment we continue to create and the sound foundation being set for our future generations.

So, as our six Harris staff head back home again, they bring with them a symbol of ongoing success, not just for the Isle of Harris Distillery but for our island and its people as a whole. Our sincere thanks to everyone who has supported us so far, we’re honoured to be putting the Isle of Harris on the distilling map.
