This weekend the Isle of Harris Distillery celebrates two years of making beautiful spirits in the heart of the Outer Hebrides. So, on the eve of this second auspicious anniversary, our thoughts turn to some other rather pleasing numbers…

Since our ‘social distillery’ first opened, we’ve been delighted to welcome 144,000 visitors through our doors, and connect with 44,000 more through our social media, as we share our island story off and online, each and every day.

The Canteen team has served 41,000 guests with delicious food and drink, and 5,600 people have learned more about our work by enjoying the distillery tour. All the while, a peat-fire has burned in the distillery hearth, offering a warm welcome to all for 690 days.

Our 5 local distillers have filled over 1,000 casks with new-make spirit as the journey towards a historic dram of The Hearach single malt whisky got underway. This distilling has generated 400 tonnes of barley draff, which we’ve donated to local crofters to feed 200 of their animals every week.

Our distillers have also been busy making the Isle of Harris Gin, some 400 small batches infused with the maritime taste of 2 tonnes of local Sugar Kelp. We’ve shipped every drop directly from our shores to the doors of countless customers, alongside 339 bars and restaurant,  and 37 Click & Collect depositories.

All this work has resulted in, perhaps, the number we are most proud of, the employment of 30 local people, bringing valuable jobs to our community and helping to support the local economy. We’ve also involved 16 local people in our ‘nosing panel’ and hosted 10 fun-filled community events.

We’ve won 19 industry awards, with more pending nominations already to our name, and with 4 export countries already secured, others are on the way. So, we’re looking forward to sharing even more of our story and spirit further afield as we grow.

There have been innumerable other great memories along the way, like the arrival of 2 new distillery babies, 1 royal visit from HRH Prince of Wales and who can forget the first (and last) ever Great Harris Gin Drought?

Tomorrow night we’ll raise a glass to all of this in celebration of continuing success, and to all of you for your continued support. We’re laying the firm foundations of a true island distillery, which we hope will last for generations, as we look forward to all that the next 2, 20 and even 200 years, may bring.
