Tarbert To Taiwan

Last week we told the story of our first steps on a new Canadian journey. This week our travels continue as we look to the east, taking our spirit from our Outer Hebridean island to another, rather more exotic island, Taiwan.

Lying 180km east of China, Taiwan is a wonderful blend of the old and the new, with modern cities, traditional Chinese temples, hot springs and dramatic mountainous terrain.

It is also one of the world’s top 5 consumers of single malt, and Taiwanese people make some pretty fine whisky of their own too, like the drams made by award-winning Kavalan distillery. But juniper-based spirits are another matter, so we’re excited to now introduce them to our Isle of Harris Gin.

We are very pleased to be assisted in exploring this fascinating part of the world by Eric Huang, an investor in our distillery and a real spirits aficionado. Eric will be our importer and distributor in this, his home country, and we are very grateful for his support.

We launch the Isle of Harris Gin on the 27th of November at one of Taipei’s newest bars and have extended an invitation to professional bar owners, bartenders and bar managers from all over Taiwan to join us for a celebration of these new shared island links.

We will also be participating in the Diageo Reserve World Class Asia competition, tasking the best bartenders from the region with designing three Isle of Harris Gin cocktails and demonstrate their mixology skills. We can’t wait to sample their creations.

Our head distiller Kenny Maclean will soon be winging his way from our western shores to represent us at the launch event and we will report back with more news and images from his time in Taiwan very soon.
