On The Rocks In Eriskay

The Isle of Harris Distillery is pleased to announce we will be co-sponsoring the Outer Hebrides’ first ever whisky-themed festival as the inaugural ‘On the Rocks’ Eriskay Festival takes place over midsummer weekend, 24th – 25th of June.

Eriskay should prove to be the ideal place to celebrate the joys of whisky, with stories now legendary of islanders recovering some of the 250,000 bottles of whisky stowed inside cargo ship SS Politician, which ran aground off the coast of Eriskay in 1941.

The island’s local pub, Am Politician, will be the focal point for festival activities, with highlights including Gaelic singing sessions, lots of traditional music to enjoy with your dram, and ceilidh band Sorradale set to fill the dance floor on Midsummer’s night.

As well as providing plenty of Isle of Harris Gin to the proceedings, the distillery will be running a masterclass to introduce our new-make spirit, the foundation of what will eventually mature into ‘The Hearach’ Single Malt.

Distillery Managing Director Simon Erlanger tells us:

‘The distillery was established to support the economies not only of Harris but of all the Outer Hebridean islands and we are thrilled to be partners of this inaugural whisky themed festival on the beautiful Isle of Eriskay. One day it would be marvellous to see the Outer Hebrides recognised as a new Whisky Region of Scotland’.

The festival will also feature an exhibition of artefacts from the SS Politician, local crafts and readings of poetry as well as an Outer Hebridean premiere screening of the new Whisky Galore! film starring Gregor Fisher and Eddie Izzard.

So now, more than seventy years after the island became awash with a magical amber cargo, Eriskay is set to bring home the whisky once more. We hope you can join us, there will be a true Outer Hebridean welcome waiting and some great drams too…chì sinn ann sibh!
