Laurence’s Lens

Connection is very important to us, so each week we try to write the best of our ongoing distillery story here, and across our social media channels, to bring a little bit of Harris life to you, wherever you are in the world.

But they say a picture can be worth a thousand words, so we’re fortunate to be able to work with photographer Laurence Winram, who helps us capture the heart of our island spirit in images as we go.
Although based in Edinburgh, Laurence is very much part of our distillery family, having been our ‘man with a camera’ since the early days of our project. His portrait work features in our beautiful 1,916 hand-bound book as well as being exhibited on walls within our distillery.

This week, Laurence made the journey to our door once again, and he spent a fantastic few days digging a little deeper into our day-to-day working world, as well as travelling around the wider island to more secret, scenic spots.
Whether clambering over sea-sprayed rocks to find the perfect shot, or lying prostrate on beds of wet seaweed to grab a great picture, his commitment to the task at hand was quite a sight to behold. But we’re glad to say, as always, he seemed to be enjoying himself throughout!
We also spent a lot of time among the distillers, staff and visitors. We are a working distillery, with an open door to any and all who wish to visit, so there was plenty opportunity to go behind the scenes as well as capture tours, fireside moments and Canteen conviviality.

As Laurence begins to pack up his kit once more, we’ve already been treated to a glimpse or two of what he’s managed to document over the last few days. And we can’t wait to see the rest.
Meantime, we wish him a safe journey home and thank him once again for playing his part in the telling of our tales. We look forward to sharing lots more of distillery life, as seen through Laurence’s lens, with you all over the coming months.
