The Danes Are Coming!

Last weekend our head distiller Kenny Maclean left Harris to head for Denmark, bringing our island spirit to the Copenhagen Gin Festival and helping to launch our Isle of Harris Gin in this exciting capital city. As with so much of our work, word continues to spread through new connections and our first forays here have come thanks to our good friend Flemming Gerhardt-Pedersen.

Flemming runs Dansk Maltwhisky Akademi with his wife Suzanne, with a mission to promote good whisky (and now gin) in Denmark. They also import whisky, host nationwide events, publish four magazines a year and have released not one, but two own-label Scotch collections. We first met Flemming in the summer of 2013, before the distillery was even built…

“We took a whisky group to Lewis and Harris in Summer 2013 and contacted the distillery managing director Simon Erlanger. He accepted to meet us in Tarbert where he showed us the plans for the distillery. This was a very nice and inspiring meeting”

It seems the Danes not only love malt whisky but gin is finding favour there too. The Copenhagen Gin Festival is the first ever festival in Denmark and this year was the first time it was held. With over 4000 people attending over the two days, it looks like the spirit is beginning to capture the imagination much as it has here in the UK.

Kenny and Flemming had a busy time manning our stand and telling our story to Danish gin-lovers, with an amazing 180 bottles of our Isle of Harris Gin being sold, poured and shared over two very enjoyable days. Our island spirit proved more than popular as Flemming tells us…

“Quite a few came back to us and said it was the best gin at the festival. Unfortunately there is not a rating system for the guests but it could have been fun to see, if Harris Gin actually was in the top 10 or maybe even top 3 at a fair like this.”

Flemming was also good enough to report that our gin is now being stocked in Kruts Karport a whisky bar and our first stockist in Copenhagen. Their Facebook page reported…

“Ny eksklusiv gin i vort sortiment. Findes kun på få udvalgte barer i landet. Elegant smag af enebær og grannåle med en cremet sødme fra sukkertang. Et must for dig der elsker god gin.”

Which in English reads:

“A new exclusive gin in our portfolio. Found only a few selected bars in Denmark. Elegant taste of juniper and pine needles with a creamy sweetness from Sugar kelp. A must for you who loves a good gin"

We’re very happy to be making inroads in this new market and credit must go our good friend Flemming for his support and help in making this happen. We’ll be catching up more with Flemming in a later News piece but for now we say ‘Tusind tak!’ to him for joining us on our journey and we look forward to sharing our story with his fellow Danes more over the coming years.
