Building the team

Since we last wrote, we have been successfully recruiting more of the team. Harris residents Shona Macleod, Angus MacSween and Alexander Macleod have joined us and are now helping develop our plans for a special experience for our future guests. Today we are advertising for a further two positions as Hosts for our canteen and retail area. If you know people who personify that special Harris welcome, please let them know.

Isle of Harris Distillers has been established to create the island's first distillery. It intends to produce a single malt whisky of the highest quality (The Hearach) - distilled, matured and bottled on the island. Additionally, we will produce an Isle of Harris gin, primarily for sale to our visitors.

The distillery is now taking shape in Tarbert and will be opening its doors in spring 2015.

It will operate all year and will be open to guests, (both local and visitors) up to six days a week, with production of our spirits taking place from Monday to Friday.

Our full team will be in place by March 2015, with each and every employee playing a key role in the success of the business and the promotion of the island.  With recruitment well underway, we’re now looking to fill the next positions, to be in place early next year.


Our Guest Host- Retail will bring hands-on retail experience, offering a warmth of welcome which showcases the best of Harris at every turn. To maximise sales, you will be responsible for merchandising and replenishment of retail stock, as well as assisting with range and supplier selection.  You will also conduct very special distillery tours and support the training of seasonal staff.

With a good eye for detail and real flair, you will ensure that the retail area inspires everyone who enters the distillery. You’ll also need a ‘fresh eyes’ approach to the displays as well as a natural desire to share your knowledge of the interesting products that are available.   


Our Guest Host- Canteen will bringcatering experience to the distillery canteen, ensuring a consistently high standard of food and drink is served in a warm and welcoming atmosphere to staff, visitors and locals alike. You will be responsible for the procurement, preparation and display of all food items while managing supply through excellent relationships with suppliers.  You will also conduct very special distillery tours and support the training of seasonal staff.

With a background in catering and a passion for good food and local produce, you must be flexible enough to deliver both food preparation and service, while maximising sales in a seasonal business. A certain flair will be needed to create an experience which exceeds guest expectations at all times. 


Every member of the team will have Harris at their heart, so will be ambassadors for the island.  As such, your personality and behaviour will embody all that Isle of Harris Distillers stands for.
