Who we are

Our distillery began life with the original Tarbert Ten, a group of local men and women who now form the foundation for the day to day running of the Harris Distillery.

Heading up the spirit production is Kenny Maclean from Strond. A busy crofter, family man and former engineer with a passion for fixing things, Kenny is well used to getting hands on with any challenge. Working with him are Donald, father of five and a skilled builder by trade. Although laying claim to the title of team joker, Donald is no stranger to hard work and will be grafting as part of the distilling team. Completing the production team line-up are Billy, a time-served joiner and the self-proclaimed best golfer of our group and Donnie Macleod (not to be confused with Donald!) a keen squash player and lapsed Munro climber. Collectively, they make a strong and enthusiastic production team!

Shona leads the guest team, setting out to give you a warm island welcome when you visit. With a strong background in hotels and restaurants both here and on the mainland, she brings a wealth of experience to this important role. Taking care of catering for the staff and all of our guests is Kate, a South African girl who among other things ran a family restaurant near Cape Town before making her life here. Peter, who's originally from Poland, also fell in love with the island and made the move to Harris last year. Another hands on individual, he looks after the retail area and is currently renovating his new family home in Drinishader. Sandra, a Seilebost girl, returned home after gaining a Communications Degree and is now kept busy with young son Rory. Her love of people makes her a natural when it comes to chatting with our guests on distillery tours.

Completing the team, we have two very organised men who keep our administration and finances in order as well as helping to look after all our guests. Alexander, who hails from Scalpay, left behind a banking career in the Highlands to join the team, while Angus blows off a little steam after his office work by playing the bagpipes. If you hear a distant skirl of the pipes when you visit, it may well be Mr MacSween just stepping away from his desk...

In our first year we have been delighted to build on this strong team, more than doubling our number of staff including a vibrant group of young people drawn from our community. We've also been able to recruit a fifth local distiller to assist in our spirit production and help meet demand for our Isle of Harris Gin.

It's a Harris family we hope to keep growing as the years go by, passing on knowledge and experience from generation to generation.
